Part Three: The Fantastic Spastic Elastic Band In July of 2001, Little Nero was experiencing some difficulties. Creatively, though the songs were developing well, some members were not satisfied with the direction the band was taking. Additionally, a lack of live performances was basically bringing everybody down. When the band signed up one night to play open mike night at Casey's Night Club the following week, and then returned seven days later to find the club had gone out of business, morale hit an all-time low.
Seeking to return to their roots, Mike, Graham, and Owen amicably parted ways with Matt, and soon arranged a reunion with original Penfold guitarist, Brian "Buzz" Slack. A meeting was set-up, the four guys hit it off rather well, and things began to feel just like old times again. They met at Brian's home in Allentown to practice in mid-August, and found it quite enjoyable to play several old Penfold songs that they were still rather fond of. However, though satisfied with the newly formed Penfold, the three original members felt compelled to work together more exclusively, thus going even deeper into the roots of their collaboration. They three convened at Mike's aunt's house one Saturday night in late-August and, each playing a few different instruments, recorded two tracks: "Spiked Lemonade/Spiked Coffee" and "There Is An In" (the latter of the two, incidentally was fairly equally penned by all three, a first in their history.) Mike had already recorded a few tracks on his own and posted them at mp3.com, thus they added these two songs plus a new Buozis-solo track to the site, and dubbed it "The Fantastic Spastic Elastic Band." The group enjoyed the songs, and recording them so much, that less than a month later, they got together once again to record five more tracks, creating the very first FSE album. Progress is now being made toward live shows, as soon as the band decides how they would perform these tracks in a live setting. |
